Silicone Rubber in the Medical Industry

The medical industry is one of the largest and most important sectors of the global economy. Every day we rely on doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. However, within the medical community, these professionals rely on a wide array of medical devices to diagnose, monitor, treat and prevent diseases and other conditions. As new medical devices are designed and manufactured, engineers have discovered the best material for producing them: liquid silicone rubber (LSR).

Custom silicone injection molded products play an important role by adding function to medical devices that are critical to the health of the person using them. Medical devices have to have biocompatibility, chemical resistance, durability, and a high resistance to deformation when exposed to a range of temperatures. Liquid silicone rubber offers these, and many other properties, that make it a great material for medical applications.

The ability to sterilize the material using a variety of methods makes LSR attractive to the medical industry. It is highly resistant to chemicals, bacterial growth, water, and oxidation. Silicone is a very pure material when compared to other elastomers. It does not contain any additives that could leach out of the material resulting in negative side effects. Additionally, silicone is hypoallergenic, mold resistant, and mildew resistant. This gives silicone the ability to come in contact with skin for extended periods of time without any adverse reactions.

At SiTECH, it is a distinct honor to provide silicone products to the medical industry, because we know how important it is to put functioning durable solutions in the hands of medical professionals.
