Liquid Injection Molding (LIM): How It’s Done

Did you know that SiTECH is a trusted liquid injection molding company? That’s because we specialize in liquid silicone rubber injection molding, with advanced manufacturing capabilities that give us the ability to create precise components and parts. We also provide technologically advanced services such as rapid prototyping and high-volume production.

LSR is short for liquid silicone rubber. Liquid silicone injection molding (LIM) is a method of customizing the molding of high-viscosity, two-part liquid silicone rubber (LSR). We only work with LSR and injection molding due to its extremely durability, high tear and tensile strength, flexibility, conductive properties, insulating properties, biocompatibility, and hardness range.

Most of all, molded silicone rubber remains stable through extreme temperatures as low as -75°F and as high as 400°F. Not many materials can withstand that kind of swing! LSR is also desirable because it can resist water, oxidation, chemicals, bacteria, rust and stains.

A Look at the LIM Process

With liquid silicone injection molding, sealed raw material is connected to our state of the art machines. We automatically meter it to a one-to-one ratio, adding the pigment of the customer’s choosing, and then injecting it into a barrel (water-cooled). This mixes with the material so it doesn’t catalyze. We then inject the material into a cavity (hot mold) so it can cure in just seconds. One the mold is opened, we remove the part, and then start the whole process over again.

Our liquid injection molding process is ideal because it results in a wide variety of consistent, precise, cost-effective silicone keypads and related components.

4 Top Benefits of LSR Molding

LSR molding has many advantages for our clients, including:

  1. Minimal Risk of Contamination: Because liquid injection molding uses a closed loop system, the raw material is sealed and thus remains untouched until it transforms into the final product. This translates to a minimal risk of contamination that gives you peace of mind.
  2. Better Automation: LIM machines automate processes that compression molders simply can’t compete with. Our faster automation shortens cycle times, saves customers money and reduces labor intensity.
  3. Higher Volume Production: Because the LIM machine is a precision instrument, our molders can set precise settings for temperature, shot size, pressure, injection rates, and cycle times. Thus, we can minimize waste and ensure repeatability while creating cost-effective yet highly complex products. Plus, our platinum curing catalyst reduces cycle times even further, bringing the price per piece down.
  4. Uniformity: Because LIM parts don’t need high pressure and heat to melt the raw material, you get a more consistent flow of LSR into the mold. Uniformity is a top priority here.
