Design is an integral component of any keypad. We talk a lot about the functionality of keypads and how silicone is the best and most versatile material. However, we can’t forget about the wide spectrum of graphic design capabilities that silicone technology affords as well. Visually appealing graphics have a big influence over how users feel about your product.
A well-designed keypad does two things: it enhances the appearance of your product and it enhances the functionality. Here are some tips that can augment the design of your silicone rubber keypad, along with the intended application of graphics.
Key Shape
This is one of the most important factors when it comes to the design of silicone rubber keypads. It stands to reason that they have to be durable in design, as people will be pressing those keys quite frequently. This is why you have to make them aesthetically appealing to touch, with pleasing tactile qualities.
Key Design
The key design is integral in the ability to apply graphics of any kind. Here at SiTECH, we use a silk screening process that applies graphics directly onto our molded silicone rubber keypads. The ink used in this process is silicone based, creating a cross-link bond to the molded keypad once cured.
The result? A hard-wearing and long lasting graphic with a long lifespan that can match that of your keypad.
Key Styles
When it comes to design application, there are certain styles that are more conducive to the application of graphics. Other types of key styles can be very difficult to apply and can even cause complications during the screening process. So, we have determined that the best key design that is simplest for all molding purposes is a flat key top. Curved surfaces can certainly be printed on too, featuring the same artwork that a flat key can.
With very thin keypads, we can print labels underneath to illustrate the artwork through the keypad – a long-lasting method of graphic design that works especially well with silicone rubber keypads because the artwork is not touched or manipulated after the keypad has been assembled.
Keypad Graphics
We surface print all positive and reverse graphics utilizing high-quality silicone inks that are cross-link bonded to the keypad throughout the curing process. Screening can be performed on both sides of the keypad with clear silicone application. We use Pantone numbers for color specs but we can also match color chips.
Coatings applied can range from abrasion and chemical resistant to industrial pre-coat and adhesive. We take the following considerations into account when designing keypads:
- Keypad Size
- Keypad Colors
- Keypad Mat Thickness
- Keytop Dimensions
- Mounting Hole and Boss Details
- Radii Dimensions
- Key Spacing
- Actuation Force
- Material Specifications
- Legends & Colors
