The Advantages of Silicone Keypads to Alternatives

Silicone keypads still reign supreme over other alternatives ranging from plastic to touchscreen. While those other alternatives may have a place in some applications and industries, the fact remains that silicone is the most durable and flexible in most industries. That’s why we specialize in silicone keypads: the industries our clients are involved in have a high demand for reliable functionality. When a user reaches for a keypad, in many cases, it’s a life or death situation. In others, the flow of operation could stop suddenly if a button fails to engage.

You can’t make a selection on a touch screen if you’re wearing gloves. So, those in the construction, medical and transportation industries can’t rely on those for efficient operation. We also appreciate that silicone offers a better price point for our clients, all of whom are looking to cut costs where they can. With consistent innovation advancing silicone keypads beyond what was initially thought possible, this alternative is still the most cost feasible.

Delayed responses…mistypes…error messages…these are all quite common, oftentimes due to a disruption in electrical charge by anything from water and fabric to ambient light and electromagnetic interference. Some manufacturers have responded to these problems with a resistive touch screen, a film screen covered by a glass panel if you will; however, the potential for lower image quality and lack of responsiveness is still present.

With hard plastic, glass or touch screens, there is always the chance of cracking under pressure or under extreme conditions. Molded silicone keypads are resistant to damage, weather, very high or low temps, bacteria growth and chemicals. Particularly in high-demand industries such as military, medical, auto and aeronautic, there’s no margin for error.

The next area where silicone blows by the competition is in price. With touch-screen expansion kiosks, for example, the average cost ranges between $3,000 and $10,000, which only includes standard software and no customizations that can double the price. Then, you could have to shell out $500 per kiosk or more for licensing fees. Rubber keypad products are typically much more affordable because they aren’t as dependent as those based on constantly-evolving, expensive technology advancements.

Even if you have a custom-made piece of equipment using plastic, glass or touch screen, it’s of little use to you if the results are inconsistent and dysfunctional. Custom silicone keypads are versatile, dependable and durable for a whole host of industries.
